Online gambling is a very recent development or add on to the primitive gambling practices known to the world. But in spite of its recent origin the effect and popularity of the same is quite huge. It can be said that since the impact is widespread that is the only reason which makes us discuss the boon or bane factor for the same. Before we start off to getting involved with the pros and cons of the topic let us first have an overall idea of the topic.

‘Online gambling’, think for a moment what vibes this word sends to you, thrill, convenience, action, insecurity , maybe some of the probable reactions you would associate with it. Online casino gambling means staking anything of value in expectation of winning, which is the result of an outcome of a particular nature. Betting or staking is a common feature of our daily lives but doing the same in order to win huge sums of money and where even one’s own valuables are at stake, is a different story. Now connect the same with its getting online, ‘Wow’ could be the possible emotion of many and ‘Oh No’ of some others. Well for sure it’s the experience in past which makes different reactions to the same situation.

Gambling is a pleasure activity and like all games have rules so does it. If one forgets the ground rules and gets over involved into deriving pleasure the game’s reputation should not be staked. Online gambling for sure has given the world many advantages which cannot be overlooked.
To start with the foremost feature of it being liked is the convenience factor. The convenience of it being played from anywhere, where one can find an Internet connection makes it loveable. If you are above the age of 21, has an Internet connection and loves to gamble then online gambling is just a click away. Next we see the choice of games available online. It is actually difficult to find all the variety in one casino, but when it comes to gambling online we have all the variety available at the click of a button. One can choose from varieties of poker, roulette, blackjack and slot machines available online. Attractive bonuses and paybacks are yet another attraction to playing the game online. The logger has the access to all the online gambling sites, so one can change its mind and site at any point of time, if the scheme offered does not continue to lure him. In order to keep the gamblers continue playing the game on one site, the online casino owners have to ensure satisfaction in terms of returns.

Next we can see is the security aspect. In online gambling the financial as well as personal security is absolute. The site owners ensure maximum security of the financial details which are shared by the gambler. On the other hand personal identity is also not revealed. People generally play with fake identities, to the extent of pretending to be opposite sex many times.

Another attraction to online gambling is that it is generally free to register on to these sites, so that also fades away the initial inhibitions. A gambler can even take trial games to have a feel of the sport without actually involving the money. This makes him understand the game and still have the safety of not staking anything. The negative aspect surrounding the popularity of the game is mainly the addiction factor. Gamblers get so addicted to the gambling that they fail to decide where to put a stop to the game. More than a game it becomes an addiction, which many of us know, generally result in huge losses, which in turn become huge debts. It is only after loosing that one realizes the worth of the amount lost. Moreover, another related point into the financial losses and gains in online casino gambling is that one does not actually feel the money. Since it is all in electronic form the losses are generally, not felt till the time one sits back to realize the value of it. This generally takes one down to a more severe extent. In traditional casinos where the pain of loss is almost instant and it makes the gambler stop the game immediately, in online gambling since things are virtual it takes a longer time for the gambler to feel the loss.

With the ease of internet connection and the comfort of disguising one’s identity many minors are attracted to the game. With fake identities and use of credit cards they fail to realize the extent to which they can go wrong. The college going youngsters have a huge liking for online gambling, as it makes them think that with every win their share of spending increases in manifolds. This is what they term as ‘easy money’, not realizing that the reverse has deeper effects. Online gambling is a boon or bane, this cannot have a one sided conclusion. As far as the convenience aspect is taken into account I personally feel that it is bliss for many. When we think of gambling we only focus on particular segment of people who would be involved in it. We cannot forget the housewives, the older generation, the not so wealthy, and the introverts who have the urge to play but fail to publicize their thoughts, can now have an option too. Apart from this all those workaholics who would love to play but their engagements restrict them from gambling have now had an option to relax and enjoy the game.

No doubt that online gambling is heading towards a negative social impact where school going kids are also developing an addiction towards it. There are families who are under severe debts due to their family members’ addiction towards the game. Since the accessibility is much more easy so the urge to play is also fulfilled faster this is leading to sever addictions. The above arguments will not lead us anywhere as it is a boon for some and bane for the others. What really matters in the end is not the composition of online gambling but the mental frame of the gambler. Why do we criticize the invention and the sport? As for me it’s a growth and a development, and how an individual takes it, is one’s own decision. We need to decide when to put the glass down, before it starts aching or after it has left us sprained.

Gambling and Mythology

Gambling is one of the oldest forms of entertainment and leisure known to man. Many civilizations have glorified gambling and it has been an intrinsic part in festivals and rituals. In fact gambling has played a major role in the formation of nations and in battles throughout the world. Gambling as we know it today has many signs which show its cultural rootedness and a particular game being played in a region might have rules peculiar to that region only. There are numerous instances from mythology and popular folklore of cultures around the world that show how gambling played a very important role in the lives of people. Today gambling is a multi billion dollar industry. One can access games from anywhere in the world through online casino sites and does not even need to be physically present at the casino to play the games. Here is a brief overview of how gambling has been a part of mythology in different culture around the world

The Indian Culture

Gambling as an activity might be considered a vice in India but it is an integral part of the Indian culture. In Indian mythology too gambling has played a very important role. In the Mahabharata which is one of the greatest epics of the Hindu religion the Kauravas and the Pandavas take part in a game of dice which is seen as the turning point in the story. The Pandavas lose everything, their kingdom, their right to rule and are sent to exile. On top of that the wife of the Pandavas, Draupadi is humiliated in open court by the Kauravas when Lord Krishna comes to her rescue. Thus the game of dice becomes the cause of the very dishonour of the Pandavas and it ultimately leads to the battle of Kurukshetra. Shakuni the uncle of the Kauravas is supposed to be an expert at the game of the dice and it is he who devises the devious plan to get the Kauravas involved with the Pandavas through the game. This is his act of revenge as he knows that the Kauravas won’t stand a chance in battle against the Pandavas. Thus we see that gambling is the key to the plot of the Mahabharata and shows that it was an accepted social activity during the Aryan period. If we observe the major festivals of India like Holi and Diwali then we find that gambling is supposed to be an auspicious activity on these days. These festivals herald the coming of newness in terms of colour, season and financial well being. It is said that if Lakhsmi the Goddess of wealth is generous to you on Diwali then the coming year will be a prosperous one. Thus on this day people gamble in millions and in almost every alternate household there is a big gambling party. Diwali truly is the material festival.

Gambling and the Greeks

Gambling found special importance in ancient Greece and the Greeks considered it more than just a fun filled activity. Just as it is today Greeks gambled in sports and races. It is said that there was huge betting in the ancient Olympics as well. In Greek mythology it is said that the sea, heaven and hell were created when Poseidon, Hades and Zeus sat at a game of dice. Zeus took Olympus, Hades the Underworld and Poseidon took the Sea. Another famous Greek myth is that Fortune was the daughter of Zeus and Tycho. Once Zeus accidentally met the goddess of Chance Tycho and the two together had a daughter called Fortune. Fortune being a goddess herself was very fond of games of chance and blessed those who played her games with passion and enthusiasm. Gambling was an important form of entertainment in ancient Greece and soldiers who were at war indulged in it regularly. There were even a number of gambling houses which paid regular taxes to the government. Many of the casino games some which are even played on online casino sites have their origin in the gambling houses of ancient Greece. They closely resemble the native games which are played with fervour in Greece even today.

The Romans Loved to Gamble

It is a fact that the Romans were hardcore gamblers and gambling was sort of a national pastime. Many historians state that gambling was in fact recognised as a major social problem in the Roman Empire. The Romans borrowed somewhat from Greek mythology when it comes to having their goddess of good luck. The Roman goddess of good luck was called Fortuna. She wore a blindfold and was supposed to be just with everyone. Her symbol was the wheel of fortune, something that is used even today in many games. The wheel of fortune is supposed to have given way to the Roulette and there are zillions of similarities between the two. There were big temples to the goddess in ancient Rome some of which survive even today and amazingly a lot of the people still look to her for good luck and prosperity.

Gambling in the Americas

The Mayans and Aztecs of America also practiced gambling on quite a large scale. Macuilxochitl was the Aztec God of gambling, feasts, music and dance. The Aztecs worshipped Macuilxochitl who was also known as Xochipilli. His name means five flowers and he was supposed to be very powerful bringing upon doom on anybody who insulted the game or cheated in it. The Mayans had a public domain for gambling. Gambling was a way to maximise profits for the high priests of Society. The ancient Mayans created a ball game which was very popular. People betted on the two teams and this was very similar to the soccer games we see today as there was a goal as well. Politics was also part of the game and it was well supported by religious leaders, the government officials and the commoners. It is somewhat scary to know that after the game either the winning team or the losing team was sacrificed to appease the Gods. So it was kind of a game of death. Thus we see that religion was deeply involved in the ballgame and people betted on who would walk out alive of the arena.

Thus it is seen that gambling has played a major role in many cultures around the world and the mythology of these cultures are full of legends which support the same.

Online Casinos for Real Money

Gambling is a huge industry that provides some of the most holistic entertainment environments for individuals as well as groups. It is multi-billion dollar industry with mammoth infrastructure and employment. Land based casinos are not just places where people risk their money, win and have a good time. The striking environment tagged along with drinks, attractive women, music and huge jackpots make the customer feel like a king.

Yet it is this very environment that many are shunning today as they feel it has a negative impact on their style of playing. For serious as well as novice gamers, the Internet is the new frontier. Since the advent of the internet and its widespread access to homes and workplaces the internet gambling industry has
been growing at a rapid rate. More and more people are starting to stake their money online. In the beginning, people were apprehensive of online casinos as the verification of the genuine ones was not that easy. Also since it was a new arena altogether people found it uneasy and orthodox gamers still flocked to the land based casinos. But gradually these fears where diminished and today the internet gambling industry stands tall with over 25 million users patronizing it. In 1995, there were only 24 Internet gambling sites available online. Just over a decade later, in 2006, that number has increased to over 100 times that, to more than 2,500 Internet gambling Web sites, consisting of 1,083 online casinos, 592 sports and race-books, 532 poker rooms, 224 online bingos, 49 skill game sites, 30 betting exchanges, 25 lottery sites, and 17 backgammon sites.

Why Online Gambling?

While land based casinos are widely available more and more people are flocking the internet gambling sites mainly because of four reasons. Online gambling is comfortable as you can access it anytime and anywhere. A
lso the atmosphere and clientele of land based casinos serve as a major distraction to gamblers and many prefer avoiding them. Online gambling also helps you to adjust the pace and nature of the game play. But the most important fact is that online gambling has a potential for much bigger wins and the overall expenditures come down drastically when gambling online.

It’s Easy and Real Money!

While playing online there are a few things that one should always keep in mind. As there is a chance of sites being fraudulent one should look for some key signs which more or less guarantee the authenticity of a site. Always check for the service provider of the site as well as the licensing and the terms and conditions. Also keep your computer secure as someone else might play through your account and you might lose money. For opening a player account one needs to provide some
very confidential information. Hence it is always good to re-check for the reliability of the casino.

Online casinos are an easy way to make a lot of money if one knows how to. Therefore it is sensible to properly learn the ins and outs of the game before indulging in it. Transfer of cash into a player account is not that difficult though it is recommended not to use credits cards for the same as some sites don’t accept them. Most sites allow orders from browsers that correspond using a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), which ensures that your private information remains strictly private. It is advised to pay through Neteller, Eco Card, Central Coin Banking, FirePay (Surefire), Ewallet Xpress/900Pay, MoneyBookers or Click2Pay. Also some casinos have restrictions on nationals of particular countries and so one should always read the rules and regulations properly.

Money for Nothing!

Online gambling requires a very small initial investment and hence anyone can stake in them. Besides the bets are categorized keeping in mind the pockets of various customers. Thus one can bet as low as a few cents to hundreds of dollars and still stand a chance to win a jackpot. Online casinos can offer some really mammoth jackpots and the best part is that you can win them sitting at hom
e. The biggest jackpot ($220,671.64) ever won by a UK citizen was by Dan R., a computer technology advisor from Nottinghamshire. Thus all the money is up for grabs for you only if you can dedicate some amount of skills to it. Playing online can be a lot of fun and it is much easier to regulate your bet size and also take the advantage of the generous bonuses that most sites offer. Also online gaming can be very interactive and have huge range of other options to offer.

Most people who spend a lot of time on the internet engage in online gambling as well. It is very important to understand the nuances of a game and the regulatory mechanisms of the sites as they to after all are trying to make money. They wouldn’t like you to win at their expense hence there are some specific codes which restrict unlawful gameplay. It is good to be aware of them and try to play around them.

Also the withdrawal process of the money you win generally is simplified and you can convert the entire sum to cash within a span of forty eight hours without any hassles. Most online casinos ask for a certification of the account for which keeping a copy of your passport or any of your utility bills makes sense.

What lies ahead?

Playing poker, keno, blackjack, dice games such as craps, and on roulette wheels and slot machines on your computer ca
n be fun. But there have been huge outcries against online gambling as such since it tends to have some negative effects in the long run. The United States has banned any form of online gambling whereas the UK recently passed a regulatory mechanism so as to streamline the online processes.

Most governments who ban online sites do so out of a fear that they will not be able to oversee these sites directly as they are global in nature. They also fear the outreaching social consequences they might have as it is easily accessible and the youth of a nation could become severely addicted to it. Also gambling being a very addictive entertainment form could easily have a major impact on the economy of a nation and later could lead to dire consequences if the government has no ways of regulating them. All this said it is still predicted that the future of the online gambling industry is bright and there are no major hurdles as such. It is still gro
wing at a rapid pace and a few adjustments made can turn it into a positive industry. Many of the sites already have strict rules regarding the age limits of players and minors are not allowed to gamble. It is very important for the online gambling companies to keep in mind that they can survive only if their overall impact on society is positive.

Beginners Luck

Simon entered a casino for the first time. He was not at all familiar with games; however, a friend helped him to play a simple game of cards. And though he least expected he won the game. This is called the beginners luck. In other words, beginners luck is a situation where a person gets success in a field where he does not carry any experience. The phrase ‘beginners luck’ is very common in the world of gambling. It is so because gambling is a game, which is partially sometimes even completely, related to luck. Luck does not have anything to do with experience. It is basically a matter of chance which holds the power to change anybody’s destiny. It is true that experience and knowledge helps a lot to get success in gambling, however in the end it is the luck which dominates success in gambling.

Life of beginners luck: The life of beginners luck is not long. When a person starts acquiring some experience, the beginners luck comes to an end. For example Simon got the tag of ‘beginners Luck’ when he won his first game in casino. He started playing regularly in the casino. Now he won’t get the same tag in future. This is because now he carries the experience which was not there when he was playing for the first time. This example put forward the fact that beginners luck can exist only for a short span of time. Playing in an online casino can substantially add to you being lucky the first time.

Origin of beginners luck: Many people suggest plenty of reasons for the origin of beginners luck in gambling. Some says it happens because of the absence of pressure and some says it is because of the simplicity while playing. However, the exact reason for the origin of beginners luck is still a mystery.

Beginners Luck leads towards experience: It is true that experience causes the death of beginners luck; however, beginners luck in one of the strong reason for the origin of experience. Beginners luck always leads towards experience. It is so because there hardly is any player who restricts himself from gambling after getting his first success. Getting success in gambling always boosts ones interest towards it. The player starts giving more time and attention which in turn provides him experience in gambling.

Beginners luck is rare: Beginners luck is present in almost every activity we perform, however, the possibility of its occurrence is rare. Not every beginner can enjoy this luck. It happens by chance and cannot be seen time and again. For example- Henry and Tom were beginners in the game of poker. Both of them started playing the game together, but only Henry got the success. It happened because of the rare nature of beginner’s luck. Everybody does not get a taste of it.

Overall it can be concluded that beginners luck takes place by chance. There is no specific formula for getting the same. It can be considered as a grace of god which selects the most appropriate innocent mind to shower its blessings.

Gambling Addiction Treatment

It is sad to see no end of such topics, where on one side we enjoy new research and developments and on the other side we see people having adverse effects of such innovation. If after such colossal progress in the standard of human civilization, we as human beings are losing control over ourselves, then who do we blame for it? People have sacrificed so much to bring into shape even one small invention, and here we have another bunch of people who are mercilessly busy in either finding ways to spoil that invention or misuse it. Over the years as we have witnessed a steady growth in the progress of economies, similarly we have observed a steady growth in crime rates as well. A steady increase in criminal activities is pulling down the overall growth of a nation.

The topic of ‘
Gambling Addiction’ goes on similar lines. On one hand we saw the remarkable invention of online casino sites and Internet Gambling and ‘lo’ within no time we heard about the negative aspects of internet gambling. People getting addicted to it, families suffering due to it, teenagers adopting wrong means to gamble, etc. were some of the after-effects of the invention. Infact, now we come across more people who are have negative vibes for the game. The positives have suddenly disappeared.

Now how does one identify a Problem Gambler?

Well if one has got a problem, how do we identify? I feel no one needs to put their minds to work; the person having a problem speaks for it-self. Their behavior, habits, attitude all go for a toss and if one observes for some time, such people are easily identifiable. Although, agreed that unlike other types of addiction where consumption of a physical substance makes things more obvious, here it might take some more time for the problem to become obvious.

* Restlessness: Problem gamblers often become restless and since gambling is always on their minds, they are unable to concentrate on other things.

* Strong Urge: In spite of knowing that excessive gambling is ruining their lives, such people cannot control their urge to gamble. They make several unsuccessful attempts but fail to control the urge to play.

* Secretive: With excessive gambling, naturally there is a drain of finances. Problem gamblers tend to become secretive of their finances and tend to hide their expenditure from their near and dear ones, which leads to mistrust in the long run.

* Broken Relationships: As a gambler starts enjoying the game and progresses towards becoming a problem gambler, on its way it puts on stake many important relationships. With less amount of time to spend with family and friends, certain very important relationships get tarnished.

* Isolation: Such people start preferring to live in isolation, as it gives them time to think more about the game and also to play more.

* Financial Turmoil: The finances of problem gamblers often become a problem. Since with online gambling, the pain of losing the money seeps in at a much later stage, by the time they realize the implications, the financial system of the gambler already becomes a mess. Generally it is seen that that there are huge debts on such people, which leads to a lot of tension.

No treatment is successful till the time the patient itself wants to get cured. So for a start, the problem gambler should be interested in finding a cure for itself. Now, that this problem is spreading rapidly worldwide, we have special trained professionals also who help in providing cure to such people. Following are the common ways of treating a problem gambler:

* Self Help: As mentioned earlier, till the time a person himself is not interested in finding a way out of the obsession, nothing else will work. A problem gambler needs to do some self analysis and find out ways to stop the ongoing destruction. Self analysis leads to realization of one’s responsibilities towards others and the importance of others in one’s life.

* Counseling: Counseling has proved fruitful to quite an extent in such cases. As, such people lose their social acceptance; generally they lose trust of their family members and friends also, so they have no one to share their problems. In such cases the help of a professional counselor does wonders for problem gamblers. Once the problem gambler starts trusting the counselor, the process of healing starts. With time the counselor shows the correct path and pulls the addict out of the trap. A recent development in this field has been the start of ‘phone counseling’. Phone counseling is being accepted with open arms as it solves the two major hitch of a problem gambler. First is the hitch of revealing the identity, and the second is that it overcomes the barriers of time and place.

* Peer Support: This has the most promising results. Peer support allows the problem gambler to recover without having to go through the disgrace of its family members. There are various groups of people who help the problem gambler to get out of the addiction without disclosing their identities.

* Family and Friends: Although a slightly difficult way to shun away the problem of gambling, but if applied in the right spirit this method works the fastest. Every individual is very attached with its family and friends and if they step forward to help, an addict is likely to recover fast. But generally this does not happen, as during the period when a gambler progresses towards becoming a problem gambler, it loses the trust and love of all its family members and friends.

So the above mentioned points make us aware of the various methods which can be adopted to provide treatment to the problem gambler. The basic requirement in all the methods is strong will power, failing which all the methods will prove futile. Gambling is otherwise a pleasure activity, so one should try to take is as an option for recreation, and avoid making it a problem for itself and for others.

Online Gambling in USA might become legal again

This could be a major step towards undoing the harm that has been done to the online gambling industry in the United States. The SAFE Port Act or the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 left many of the online gambling industry seeking for a logical solution to the enforced ban. This act is supposed to protect the American borders in cyberspace and hence was passed almost unanimously. The after effect was to be felt by the hundreds of authentic online casinos that did brisk business with American gamblers but now were refraining from taking in American customers. Transfer of funds from a financial institution to an online casino site is prohibited by this act with a few exceptions.

But now US Republican Congressman Pete Sessions has introduced Bill HR 6663 which could be a major step in defining the otherwise ambiguous Safe Port Act. The Safe Port Act prohibited illegal online gambling but it did not define specifically as such what is illegal. The new bill could pave the way for all the companies that left the US market to re-enter it and start their business with a stamp of authenticity. Because of the ambiguity of the previous act many legitimate companies withdrew from the US market and thus the stature of the companies degraded greatly in the public sphere. All this might be undone in the present scenario and the actual fake companies who are still thriving with the help of unscrupulous means will be prosecuted.

This bill if passed will be beneficial for the personal freedom of the Americans as they will be able to place bets without any hassles. This will also help to differentiate between sports betting and online gambling as sports betting is seen to be harmful to the spirit of sportsmanship and integrity of professional and amateur sports. Online gambling specially through online casinos is totally different from sports betting and hence should not be penalized. In fact many UK based online casino companies had been listed in the London Stock Exchange thus reflecting a high degree of transparency and enquiry. Fraud or unscrupulous means from such companies was not expected but still they had to withdraw because of the previous law. The bill will also facilitate clear cut online payment processes thus uplifting the reputation of the online gambling industry.

However many industry experts are critical of the bill as well as they think it might actually work the other way around. Thus as in the case of Bodog companies which have both sports betting and online poker might face the brunt even if their operations are legal. Thus there are certain hurdles which need to be taken care of to make the laws more lucid. Online gambling is a flourishing industry and it is still at its nascent stage as of now. Playing at a casino online is slowly becoming very popular throughout the world. However It needs proper guidance and reforms so that the processes become smooth and people get full worth of their money. Banning is not a solution to the problem and the only way to validate it is by putting it under a proper law and regulatory authority.
